Is Egypt in Africa or the Middle East? Both, and Why
Egypt sits in the northeastern corner of Africa, with Sinai on the Asian side of the Suez Canal, and it belongs to both the African Union and the Arab League.

Egypt is in Africa and is also counted in the Middle East. It lies in the northeastern corner of Africa, while the Sinai Peninsula, beyond the Suez Canal, is usually regarded as part of Asia. Egypt was a founding member of the Arab League, which has its headquarters in Cairo, and joined the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, in 1963.
Key takeaways
- Egypt lies in the northeastern corner of Africa; the Sinai Peninsula, its northeastern extremity, is usually regarded as part of Asia.
- The Suez Canal separates Africa from Asia: Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are on the African side, Sharm El Sheikh and Mount Sinai on the Asian side.
- Egypt joined the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, on 25 May 1963 as a founding member.
- The Arab League was formed in Cairo on 22 March 1945 with Egypt among its seven founding members, and its headquarters is in Cairo.
- Egypt's own antiquities authority calls the Egyptian Museum in Cairo the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East.
Is Egypt in the Middle East or in Africa?
Both answers are right, because they answer different questions. Africa is a continent, and Egypt lies in its northeastern corner, with one part, the Sinai Peninsula, usually regarded as Asia. The Middle East is the name of a region, not a continent, and Egypt is counted in it: Egypt's own antiquities authority describes the Egyptian Museum in Cairo as the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East.
So Egypt is a northeast African country and a Middle Eastern one at the same time. The table sets out the facts behind each answer.

Geography: northeast Africa, with Sinai in Asia
Egypt is a country in the northeastern corner of Africa. The Sinai Peninsula is the exception: a triangular peninsula linking Africa with Asia, usually regarded as being geographically part of Asia, and the northeastern extremity of Egypt. The Suez Canal is the dividing line, since the canal separates Africa from Asia.
The Nile Valley, with Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, lies on the African side of the canal. Sharm El Sheikh, a resort town on the southeastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula, and Mount Sinai, in the south-central part of the peninsula, are on the Asian side. A trip that adds a stay in Sharm El Sheikh, where the ultra-luxury level uses the Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh, crosses from Africa into Asia without leaving the country.
Politics: the African Union and the Arab League
Egypt belongs to the regional bodies of both. It joined the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the body that became today's African Union, on 25 May 1963, as a founding member.
It is also a founding member of the Arab League, formed in Cairo on 22 March 1945 as an outgrowth of Pan-Arabism. The founding members were Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Transjordan (now Jordan), Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The league's headquarters is in Cairo; it returned there in 1990.
Why Egypt is counted in the Middle East
Because the Middle East is a region rather than a continent, Egypt's place in it rests on ties that are easy to see. Arabic is the official language, and the same article of the Constitution names Islam as the religion of the State. Egypt helped found the Arab League, and the league is still based in Cairo.
Egypt also has a Christian church of its own. The Coptic Orthodox Church keeps Coptic, a late form of the ancient Egyptian language, as its liturgical language, and Coptic Christmas, on 7 January, is a national public holiday.
What the label means for travelers
For planning, the place matters more than the label. Governments write their travel advice for Egypt itself, area by area, not for the Middle East as a whole. The US State Department rates Egypt at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in an advisory issued in July 2025, and says do not travel to the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula, to the Western Desert unless traveling with a professionally licensed tour company, or to the border areas. The UK Foreign Office, in advice checked on 13 August 2026, advises against all travel to North Sinai Governorate and to within 20 km of the border with Libya (except the town of El Salloum), and describes the Red Sea tourist areas in the southern part of Sinai as generally low risk.

Where the journeys go
The journeys on this site run from 5 to 11 days and center on Cairo and Giza and the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, with Abu Simbel or the Red Sea at Hurghada on some of them. Questions travelers ask
Is Egypt considered part of the Middle East?
Yes. The Middle East is the name of a region rather than a continent, and Egypt is counted in it: Egypt's own antiquities authority describes the Egyptian Museum in Cairo as the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East. Egypt is also a founding member of the Arab League, which has its headquarters in Cairo.
Is Egypt an African country?
Yes. Egypt lies in the northeastern corner of Africa, and it joined the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, on 25 May 1963 as a founding member. Only the Sinai Peninsula, beyond the Suez Canal, is usually regarded as part of Asia; the Nile Valley, with Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, is in Africa.
Which part of Egypt is in Asia?
The Sinai Peninsula. It is a triangular peninsula linking Africa with Asia, usually regarded as geographically part of Asia, and it is the northeastern extremity of Egypt. The Suez Canal separates Africa from Asia. Sharm El Sheikh, on the peninsula's southeastern coast, and Mount Sinai, in its south-central part, are both on the Asian side.
Is Egypt an Arab country?
Yes. Its official name is the Arab Republic of Egypt, Article 2 of its Constitution makes Arabic the official language, and Egypt was one of the founding members of the Arab League, formed in Cairo on 22 March 1945. The league's headquarters is in Cairo, where it returned in 1990.
Is Egypt a member of the African Union?
Yes. Egypt joined the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963 as one of its founding members, and the OAU is the body that became today's African Union. Egypt therefore belongs both to the African Union and to the Arab League, which was formed in Cairo and still has its headquarters there.
Does the Middle East label change the travel advice for Egypt?
No. Governments write their advice for Egypt itself, area by area. The US State Department's advisory for Egypt, issued in July 2025, is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and its do-not-travel areas include the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula and the border areas. Check your own government's current advice before you book.
