Nile Cruise Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor: Which Direction?

Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor: the same main temples, but different nights on board, different ships and different flights. The two directions side by side.

River cruise ships moored on the Nile at Luxor

Neither direction sees more of the main temples: both include Luxor's two banks, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. A Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan sails south for 4 nights and ends in Aswan, the base for Abu Simbel. Aswan to Luxor sails north with the current, often in 3 nights, and ends in Luxor. The site's two cruises run 4 nights either way.

Key takeaways

  • The site's two Nile cruises, Luxor to Aswan and Aswan to Luxor, both run 5 days and 4 nights and both propose The Oberoi Philae.
  • Sonesta St. George I sails 4 nights from Luxor on Mondays and 3 nights from Aswan on Fridays; The Oberoi Zahra 4 nights from Luxor on Tuesdays and 3 from Aswan on Saturdays.
  • Inside the site's longer journeys, 4-night cruises sail from Luxor (8 and 10 days) and 3-night cruises from Aswan (7, 8, 10 and 11 days).
  • From Cairo, the flight to Luxor takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes and to Aswan about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes; domestic flights are not included.
  • Ending in Aswan suits Abu Simbel, 45 minutes away by air; ending in Luxor suits the road to the Red Sea at Hurghada or a hotel night in Luxor.

Nile cruise Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor: side by side

The main temples are the same both ways. What changes is the order of the visits, the nights on board on some ships, the airport you fly into and out of, and what you can do once you step off.

Nights on board: 3 or 4

On several ships, the direction decides the length. Their published schedules give 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan and 3 nights from Aswan to Luxor; a boat heading north travels with the current. Other ships sail 4 nights both ways, and so do the site's two cruises.

ShipLuxor to AswanAswan to LuxorWhere the site proposes it
The Oberoi Philae4 nights4 nightsBoth of the site's cruises, and the 4-night cruises inside longer journeys
The Oberoi Zahra4 nights, on Tuesdays3 nights, on SaturdaysThe 3-night cruises from Aswan; an alternative on the 4-night cruises from Luxor
Sonesta St. George I4 nights, on Mondays3 nights, on FridaysThe alternative on both

Oberoi's 2026 calendar lists the Philae's 4-night sailings mostly on Tuesdays and Saturdays; in 2027 they run every 8 days, so the weekday changes from one sailing to the next. Neither Oberoi ship lists sailings in June. Sonesta Sun Goddess and Historia follow the same 4 and 3 night pattern as Sonesta St. George I, from Luxor on Mondays and from Aswan on Fridays.

A vessel is proposed only where it sails the journey's own length and direction. That is why the 4-night cruise from Aswan names only The Oberoi Philae, and why the 3-night cruises from Aswan inside longer journeys propose The Oberoi Zahra, with Sonesta St. George I as the alternative.

Luxor to Aswan, day by day

Luxury Nile Cruise, Luxor to Aswan opens on Luxor's East Bank and closes in Aswan.

DayWhat you seeWhere you sleep
Day 1You board in Luxor; Karnak and Luxor TempleOn board
Day 2The Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut; the ship heads south through Esna LockOn board

Day 4Aswan: the High Dam, a boat to Philae, the Unfinished ObeliskOn board

The Unfinished Obelisk still lies in one of Aswan's granite quarries; it is believed to have been commissioned by Hatshepsut. The optional tours, which are not included, take in a balloon ride, a visit to a Nubian village and Abu Simbel; any flight for the Abu Simbel excursion is not included either.

Aswan to Luxor, day by day

Luxury Nile Cruise, Aswan to Luxor opens at the High Dam and closes at Karnak.

DayWhat you seeWhere you sleep
Day 1You arrive in Aswan; the High Dam and the Temple of PhilaeOn board

How the direction fits your flights

The Nile cruise fleet operates between Luxor and Aswan, so either direction starts with a flight or a train from Cairo and ends with another. EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air fly from Cairo to both cities nonstop.

Which direction suits whom

Luxor to Aswan

  • You want 4 nights on board inside a longer trip, as on the 8-day Classic Egypt and Nile Cruise.
  • You want Abu Simbel next: the 10-day Nile journey leaves the ship in Aswan and flies to Abu Simbel on day 8.
  • It is your first cruise, and you like the idea of meals on board and a guided visit ashore every day.

Aswan to Luxor

  • You have 7 days: the 3-night cruises from Aswan fit Cairo and the Nile into a week, as the 7-day itinerary shows.
  • You want the Red Sea next: the 11-day Red Sea journey drives from Luxor to Hurghada after the cruise.
  • You like slack in the program: the West Bank day leaves the afternoon free.
  • You want to finish with Karnak and Luxor Temple, the temples of ancient Thebes.

Cruise ship or dahabiya, and fixing the dates

A dahabiya answers the direction question for you: the site's dahabiya programs all sail one way, from Esna to Aswan, and the 6-day programs spend 5 nights on board. How a dahabiya compares with a cruise ship is set out in dahabiya or Nile cruise ship, and the two Oberoi ships are compared in Oberoi Zahra or Oberoi Philae.

A cruise ship is shared with other guests; the guided visits ashore are private. Every journey is a starting point: its length, hotels and pace can be adjusted before you confirm, subject to availability, and the written proposal names the vessel.

Questions travelers ask

Which is better, a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor?

Neither is better in itself; the main temples are the same. Luxor to Aswan runs 4 nights on the ships the site proposes and ends in Aswan, which suits Abu Simbel. Aswan to Luxor is often 3 nights, fits a 7-day trip and ends in Luxor, which suits the Red Sea. Choose by trip length and what comes next.

How many nights is a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor?

It depends on the ship. Sonesta St. George I, Sonesta Sun Goddess, Historia and The Oberoi Zahra sail 3 nights from Aswan; The Oberoi Philae sails 4 nights in either direction. The site's own Aswan to Luxor cruise is 4 nights on the Philae, and its 7-day journey uses a 3-night sailing.

Do both directions visit the same temples?

The main ones, yes: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae and the High Dam are in both of the site's cruises. The Luxor to Aswan cruise adds the Unfinished Obelisk; the Aswan to Luxor cruise keeps a free afternoon. Boats in both directions pass the lock at Esna.

Which direction is better for Abu Simbel?

Luxor to Aswan, because the cruise ends in Aswan. From there Abu Simbel is 45 minutes by air, or about 280 km (174 miles) by road, 3 to 3.5 hours each way by private car. The site's 10-day Nile journey does this, flying to Abu Simbel on day 8. The options are compared in how to get to Abu Simbel.

Can you take a longer Nile cruise?

Yes. Sonesta St. George I lists 7-night round trips, from Aswan on Fridays and from Luxor on Mondays. The Oberoi Philae sails 6 nights about once a month from each port in 2026, and The Oberoi Zahra a few 7-night cruises a year. The site's journeys use cruises of 3 or 4 nights, and the length can be adjusted.

Are flights to and from the cruise included?

No. Domestic flights are not included in any of the site's journeys, including the flights to and from a cruise; they are booked and paid separately. From Cairo, the flight to Luxor takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes and the flight to Aswan about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes.
