Luxury Egypt Travel Checklist: What to Do and When

A checklist in time order for a private Egypt trip: passport and visa rules, official travel advice, the Nile vessel and holiday dates, what to pack, and what is not included.

The Muhammad Ali Mosque on the Cairo Citadel

Work through your Egypt travel checklist in time order. Several months before, check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, choose your season and secure the Nile vessel first. About a month before, arrange the visa and read your government's current advice. In the final week, pack for modest dress. On arrival, meet your representative and plan for tips, which no journey includes.

Key takeaways

  • A passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with one blank page, according to the UK government.
  • The official tourist e-visa costs USD 30 for a single entry or USD 65 for multiple entries, paid by card on the portal; a visa on arrival costs USD 30, cash only.
  • The US State Department rates Egypt Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (July 2025): check your own government's current advice before you book and again before you fly.
  • Secure the Nile vessel first for winter, roughly October to April; Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest dates, and Nour El Nil dahabiyas do not sail from June to August.
  • Domestic flights and tips are not included in any journey, and nothing is booked until you accept the written proposal and it is confirmed in writing.

The Egypt travel checklist at a glance

The stages below are an order of work, not deadlines. Published advice on how many months ahead to book differs, so this page gives no fixed lead time; it sets out what to settle before what.

Several months before: passport, season and the Nile vessel

Your passport

A passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with one blank page, according to the UK government's entry requirements for Egypt. Check it before anything else, because the visa and every booking are made in the name and number on that passport. What happens from the aircraft door to the car is in arriving at Cairo airport.

The season and the holiday dates

Winter, roughly October to April, is the peak season for Nile and monument travel, with the busiest dates around Christmas, New Year and Easter; March to May and September are quieter shoulder months. Month-by-month detail is in the best time to visit Egypt for a luxury trip. These periods change what to book first:

PeriodWhat the sources sayWhat to do
Christmas and New YearHigher hotel and Nile-cruise occupancy in Luxor and Aswan; The Oberoi Philae makes its Christmas, New Year and Easter sailings non-refundableSecure the vessel before the hotels
Ramadan and Eid al-FitrSources differ on the date Ramadan starts; Eid al-Fitr, at its end, is expected to start on 9 or 10 March 2027, subject to the moon sighting; sites and museums run reduced Ramadan hoursExpect shorter site hours if your dates fall in Ramadan
June to AugustNour El Nil dahabiyas do not operate; The Oberoi Zahra and The Oberoi Philae list no sailings in June 2027Check which vessels sail on your dates
22 February and 22 OctoberThe Abu Simbel sun alignment, when sunlight reaches the inner statuesIf your trip is built around it, secure those exact days first

The proposal and the Nile vessel

Ask for a proposal once you know your season and your party. Sending a request costs nothing, it is not a booking, and no payment is taken with it. The proposal names the route, the hotels and room types, any Nile vessel, what is included and what is not, the full price and the terms.

For a winter trip, the vessel is the part to secure first. Ships sail on set days: The Oberoi Zahra leaves Luxor on Tuesdays for its 4-night sailing and Aswan on Saturdays for its 3-night sailing. Small vessels have few cabins: The Oberoi Philae has 22 cabins and suites, and each Nour El Nil dahabiya has 10 rooms and suites. The hotel nights then fit around the sailing day. Why the vessel fills first is set out in how far ahead to book a luxury Egypt trip.

Domestic flights

Domestic flights, for example Cairo to Luxor or Aswan to Cairo, are not included in any journey; they are booked and paid separately. EgyptAir, Air Cairo and Nile Air fly Cairo to Luxor and Cairo to Aswan nonstop, and the scheduled flight from Cairo to Luxor takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes. Book them once the vessel and hotel dates are fixed.

About a month before: the visa and government advice

The visa

The official e-visa portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, lists 79 countries and territories whose citizens can apply for an e-visa; check your nationality there. The visa fee is paid by credit or debit card through the portal only. The UK government's entry requirements for Egypt give the other routes. Visa fees are set by the state:

Visa routeState feeValid forHow it is paid
Tourist e-visa, single entryUSD 30Up to 3 months (UK guidance for tourist e-visas)Card, through the portal only
Tourist e-visa, multiple entryUSD 65Not stated separately in the source; check the portalCard, through the portal only
Visa on arrivalUSD 30Up to 30 daysCash only
Digital visa at Cairo airport, from 1 August 2026USD 36 (USD 30 plus a USD 6 service fee)Not stated in the sourceNot stated in the source

One exception applies to the Red Sea. UK government guidance says that if you arrive by air at Sharm El Sheikh and stay under 15 days at the resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, you receive a free entry permission stamp and need no visa; outside those resorts, or for longer, you need a visa. Fees and rules are set by the state, so check the portal and your own government's entry page before you apply.

Government travel advice

Read your own government's current advice before you book and again before you fly. The US State Department's advisory for Egypt, dated July 2025, is on travel.state.gov; the UK advice was updated 4 August 2026, with new information on entry requirements and regional tensions, and was still current on 20 October 2026; Australia's Smartraveller advice was updated 14 September 2026. What each said:

GovernmentOverall adviceAreas to note
United States, State DepartmentLevel 2: Exercise Increased Caution, due to terrorism, crime and healthDo not travel to the Northern and Middle Sinai, to the Western Desert unless traveling with a professionally licensed tour company, or to border areas
United Kingdom, FCDOAdvises against all travel to North Sinai and to within 20km of the Egypt-Libya borderLuxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings are excepted from its Western Desert advice
CanadaExercise a high degree of caution, with regional advisoriesThe same caution for the Red Sea coastal resorts and for Aswan and Luxor
Australia, SmartravellerExercise a high degree of cautionNames Cairo, Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Aswan, Abu Simbel and Sharm el Sheikh under this level

The US advisory also notes that emergency and intensive care facilities are limited in Egypt and may be unavailable in remote areas, so read the health and insurance sections of your own government's advice along with the headline level. What a private trip changes is covered in is Egypt safe for travelers.

The week before: what to pack

UK government advice is to dress modestly, especially in rural areas, mosques and souqs. In practice, that means:

  • For temples and holy sites: clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
  • For mosques: shoulders and knees covered, and a headscarf for women; cover-ups and headscarves are often available to borrow. Shoes come off before the prayer hall, and socks can stay on.
  • Everyday clothes: official travel advice says knee-length or longer dresses and long sleeves are preferable for women, and men should not wear shorts outside tourist areas.
  • For the heat: loose, lightweight clothing and sunscreen. The US CDC advises eating and drinking regularly, wearing loose and lightweight clothing and limiting physical activity during high temperatures.
  • Cameras and drones: drones need Ministry of Defence permission, and photographing military sites and the Suez Canal is prohibited.
  • Cash for a visa on arrival: if you have no e-visa, the visa sold on arrival is paid in cash only.

The full packing list, including evenings on board and at hotels, is in what to wear in Egypt on a luxury trip.

On arrival

  • Meet and assist. Every journey includes meet and assist at the airport by a representative.
  • The visa. Without an e-visa, buy the visa at the airport; the routes and state fees are in the visa table above.
  • Tips. Tips are not included in any journey. Customary amounts for guides, drivers, Nile crews and hotel staff are in tipping in Egypt on a private trip.
  • Photos and posts. The US advisory warns that visitors may be detained for posting anything on social media seen as critical of Egypt or its allies, or for disrespecting its cultural sites.

What the written proposal confirms

No prices are published, and nothing is booked until you accept the proposal and it is confirmed in writing. Read its Not included list before you accept: domestic flights and tips appear there on every journey.

Every journey is a starting point: its length, hotels and pace can be adjusted before you confirm, subject to availability, and any Luxury journey can be quoted at the ultra-luxury level. The steps from first request to confirmation are in how a tailor-made Egypt trip is planned. When you know your season, send your dates through the contact page.

Questions travelers ask

Can you travel to Egypt right now?

Yes: Egypt issues tourist visas online and on arrival, and the main advisories set a level of caution rather than advising against travel to the whole country. The US State Department rates Egypt Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (July 2025), and lists Do Not Travel areas including the Northern and Middle Sinai. Canada and Australia advise a high degree of caution. Check your own government's current advice before you go.

Do you need a visa for Egypt?

The official portal lists 79 countries and territories whose citizens can apply for an e-visa online: USD 30 for a single entry or USD 65 for multiple entries, paid by card. The UK government says a visa on arrival costs USD 30, cash only, and is valid for up to 30 days. Check your nationality on the portal before you travel.

How long must a passport be valid to enter Egypt?

At least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with one blank page, according to the UK government's entry requirements for Egypt. Check it several months before you travel, before you apply for a visa or book anything in its name, and read your own government's entry page as well, since it speaks for your nationality.

When should you book the Nile vessel for a winter trip?

Before the hotels. Winter, roughly October to April, is the peak season, with the busiest dates around Christmas, New Year and Easter, and ships sail on set days. Published advice on how many months ahead to book differs, so no figure is given here. Send your dates and the written proposal shows which vessels are free for them.

What should you pack for mosques and temples?

Clothes that cover shoulders and knees. In mosques, women also cover their hair, and cover-ups and headscarves are often available to borrow there. Shoes come off before the prayer hall, and socks can stay on. UK government advice is to dress modestly, especially in rural areas, mosques and souqs, so the same clothes serve most of the trip.

What is not included in a luxury Egypt journey?

Domestic flights, for example Cairo to Luxor or Aswan to Cairo, are not included in any journey; they are booked and paid separately. Tips are not included either, and every journey lists them under Not included. The written proposal names what is included and what is not, so read that list before you accept it.
