Luxury Hotels in Luxor and Aswan: Where to Stay in Each City

Al Moudira on Luxor's West Bank, the Old Cataract open during its renovation, Benben on Heissa Island, the Winter Palace closure, and how a Nile cruise changes your nights.

The Nile at Aswan with feluccas

For luxury hotels in Aswan, the Old Cataract is open, now managed by Mandarin Oriental, with guests in its historic Palace building while the Nile Wing is renovated; Benben by Dhara Hotels on Heissa Island is the quieter choice. In Luxor, the Winter Palace is closed for restoration, so look at Al Moudira on the West Bank, the Hilton Luxor or the Sonesta St. George.

Key takeaways

  • The Winter Palace in Luxor is closed for a complete restoration and will reopen as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace; sources differ on the date, so it is not proposed.
  • The Old Cataract in Aswan, built in 1899 by Thomas Cook, is open: guests stay in the Palace building's 35 rooms and suites while the Nile Wing is renovated.
  • Al Moudira Hotel on Luxor's West Bank has 54 suites grouped around private courtyards, near the Valley of the Kings.
  • Benben by Dhara Hotels, on the Nubian island of Heissa, has 24 rooms, each with an outdoor Jacuzzi.
  • On the Luxury Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan you sleep 4 nights on board, so no hotel is needed in either city.

Luxor: the West Bank or the riverside

Al Moudira Hotel, on the West Bank

Al Moudira stands on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, near the site of ancient Thebes and the Valley of the Kings. Its 54 suites are grouped around a series of private courtyards, with a pool among palm trees and a hammam of hand-painted tiles and antique basins. It suits travelers who want quiet, with the West Bank tombs and temples close by. Egypt's Palace Hotels, 10 Days uses it for its night in Luxor.

Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa

The Hilton rests on the edge of the Nile in Karnak village, facing the West Bank. It has two infinity pools and a holistic spa. It is the Luxor hotel the Luxury journeys propose first: Egypt by Dahabiya, 10 Days, for example, spends 2 nights in Luxor before boarding the dahabiya at Esna.

Sonesta St. George Hotel Luxor

On Corniche El Nile Street, the Sonesta St. George has 322 rooms, a terrace over the Nile, an outdoor heated pool with a separate children's section, a health spa and 3 restaurants: Miyako (Japanese), Beban (Italian) and Serapis. It is not the same as Sonesta St. George I, a Nile cruise ship, so check which one a proposal names.

The Winter Palace: closed for restoration

The Winter Palace, a Sofitel until the end of April 2026, is closed for a complete restoration. Mandarin Oriental took over its management on 1 May 2026, and it will reopen as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor. Sources differ on the reopening date, so it is not offered on any journey; Egypt's Palace Hotels uses Al Moudira for its Luxor night instead.

Aswan: the Old Cataract and an island hotel

Old Cataract

Built in 1899 by Thomas Cook, the Old Cataract stands on the banks of the Nile, overlooking Elephantine Island from a pink granite cliff, and an outdoor infinity pool above the river; ask whether the pool is open during the works. Mandarin Oriental has managed it since May 2026, after Sofitel. It is open: while the Nile Wing is renovated, guests stay in the historic Palace building, with 35 rooms and suites (9 rooms and 26 suites).

The whole property is scheduled for completion in July 2027, when it is due to become Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan; schedules like this can move. Egypt's Palace Hotels includes 1 night here, with breakfast, before 3 nights on the Nile; the hotel is confirmed for your dates while the renovation work continues.

Benben by Dhara Hotels

Benben stands on the old Nubian island of Heissa, overlooking Aswan. It has 24 rooms; every room has an outdoor Jacuzzi, and some room types look toward Philae Temple and the Nile. Dining is at YAM Restaurant and the Philae Bar & Terrace, and there is a spa. The hotel's pages mention no shared pool; the Infinity Suite has its own open-air pool. It is the Aswan hotel the Luxury journeys propose, with the Old Cataract as the alternative, and Cairo, Upper Egypt and Hurghada, 11 Days spends 1 night here.

The Movenpick Resort Aswan stopped operating as a Movenpick in April 2026 and is being renovated under another brand, so it is not proposed.

How a Nile cruise changes where you sleep

On a Nile cruise the ship is your hotel between Luxor and Aswan, so a cruise can replace hotel nights in both cities. On the Luxury Nile Cruise, Luxor to Aswan you sleep 4 nights on board The Oberoi Philae, or The Oberoi Zahra or Sonesta St. George I as alternatives. Add a hotel night when a particular hotel is the point of the trip.

JourneyHotel nights in Aswan or LuxorNights on the Nile
Luxury Nile Cruise, Luxor to AswanNone4 on a cruise ship
Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 DaysNone3 on a cruise ship
Egypt's Palace Hotels, 10 Days1 at the Old Cataract, 1 in Luxor3 on a cruise ship
Egypt by Dahabiya, 10 Days2 in Luxor4 on a dahabiya
Cairo, Upper Egypt and Hurghada, 11 Days1 in Aswan, 1 in LuxorNone

On Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 Days, you fly to Aswan, sail 3 nights to Luxor and fly back to Cairo, so no hotel is needed in either city. On Egypt's Palace Hotels, a night at the Old Cataract comes before the cruise and a night in Luxor after it. Domestic flights, such as Cairo to Aswan and Luxor to Cairo, are not included in any journey; they are booked and paid separately. The ships themselves are compared in a separate article on luxury Nile cruise ships.

Choosing between them

  • A heritage night: the Old Cataract in Aswan, in its Palace building while the works continue.
  • Quiet near the tombs: Al Moudira on the West Bank of Luxor.
  • Pools for a family: the Sonesta St. George Hotel Luxor, with its children's section, or the Hilton's two infinity pools.
  • A small island hotel: Benben by Dhara Hotels on Heissa, with an outdoor Jacuzzi in every room.

Hotels can be adjusted before you confirm, subject to availability, and the written proposal names each hotel and room type. Send a request with your dates and the hotels you have in mind. For Cairo, see luxury hotels in Cairo and Giza.

Questions travelers ask

Both names exist. The Sonesta St. George Hotel Luxor is a hotel on Corniche El Nile Street, with 322 rooms and an outdoor heated pool with a separate children's section.
