Private vs Small-Group Egypt Tours: What You Actually Get
Your own guide, vehicle and driver, or a group that usually tops out at 12 to 16 travelers: what each style of Egypt tour gives you, and who each one suits.

A private Egypt tour gives your party its own guide, vehicle and driver on land, on your dates and at your pace. A small group shares them with other travelers, usually 12 to 16 at most on published tours, on the operator's set departures. Private is worth it if timing and flexibility matter to you. Every journey on this site is private.
Key takeaways
- On this site, private means the guide, the vehicle and the driver are for your group alone on land; a Nile cruise ship is shared with other guests.
- Small-group operators usually publish maximums of 12 to 16 travelers on their Egypt tours; one 13-day escorted journey sets its limit at 34 guests.
- At Giza, private cars and tour buses no longer drive onto the plateau: electric vehicles carry visitors and their guides.
- The Grand Egyptian Museum's own guided tour is a group tour with other visitors; with a private guide you set the pace, and the entry slot does not limit your stay.
- Every journey on this site is private, with no group tours; Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 Days leaves Day 7 free in Cairo.
What private means on this site
On land, the guide, the vehicle and the driver are for your group alone. Nobody else joins the car at the hotel door, and the guide works to your questions and your timing rather than a group's. Every journey on this site works this way: the site sells private luxury and ultra-luxury journeys through Egypt, planned with the traveler and confirmed in writing, and runs no group tours and no budget tours.
Two parts of a trip are shared by nature. On a Nile cruise ship, the ship is shared with other guests; the guided visits ashore are private where the journey lists private guided sightseeing. A dahabiya is shared with its other guests unless your group charters the whole boat. The difference between the two kinds of vessel is set out in dahabiya or Nile cruise ship.
How big is a small group in Egypt?
Small-group operators usually publish maximums of 12 to 16 travelers on their Egypt tours. One operator that caps a tour at 16 gives its average group as 12. Limits vary with the program: one escorted journey of 13 days is limited to 34 guests, while another of the same length is limited to 12.
The guide's license does not depend on the style of tour. Egyptian law sets the conditions for a tour guide license: Egyptian nationality, medical fitness, a university qualification, a minimum age of 21 and the Ministry of Tourism's exam, which graduates in tourist guidance from an Egyptian university are exempt from. Group and private operators alike call their licensed guides Egyptologists. What a guide of your own adds is covered in a private Egyptologist guide: what to expect.
Private and small-group tours side by side
| What you get | Private (every journey on this site) | Small group |
|---|---|---|
| Guide | Your own guide, for your group alone | One guide or tour leader for the whole group |
| Vehicle and driver | Your own private, air-conditioned vehicle and driver | A vehicle shared with the group |
| Dates | Planned around your dates, subject to availability | The operator's set departure dates |
| Pace | Set with you; length, hotels and pace can be adjusted before you confirm | The group's set route and timings |
| Who you share with | Nobody on land; other guests on a Nile cruise ship | The other travelers on the departure, usually up to 12 to 16 |
| How it is priced | Quoted privately for your group and confirmed in writing | A place on a shared departure, with the cost spread across the group |
Neither style is right for everyone. The table shows what changes; which of those changes matters depends on how you like to travel.
Where the difference shows on the ground
- Early starts. Karnak and the Valley of the Kings open at 6 a.m. Karnak has little shade and is very hot by midday, so go first thing. With your own car and driver, you leave the hotel when you choose.
- Abu Simbel. The site opens at 6 a.m. One guide describes 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. as its busiest time and notes that the sun is strong by 9 a.m., so a private visit can be timed around both.
- The royal tombs. The general Valley of the Kings ticket covers three tombs of your choice, and Tutankhamun's tomb and the tomb of Seti I each need a separate ticket. With your own guide, the choice of tombs follows your interests and your energy.
- The Grand Egyptian Museum. The museum's own guided tour ticket is a group tour with other visitors, not a private tour. With a private guide you set the order and the pace, and the timed entry slot does not limit how long you stay inside.
- Giza. Here the difference narrows. Visitors now enter the plateau through a new gate on the Fayoum Highway, private vehicles and tour buses are barred, and electric vehicles carry visitors and their guides. Your guide is still yours.
Who each style suits
A private journey suits
- Couples, families and friends who want to travel on their own dates.
- Travelers who want to set the pace: an early start, a long lunch, a rest in the afternoon. Planning for that is covered in Egypt at an easier pace.
- Travelers with a particular interest, such as one tomb, one gallery or one temple, who want time there.
- Anyone who wants free time built in: Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 Days leaves Day 7 in Cairo with no plan, for the bazaar, Coptic Cairo or the hotel spa.
A small group suits
- Solo travelers who enjoy company and meeting other travelers.
- Travelers happy with a set route and fixed dates, chosen well in advance.
- Travelers who prefer the cost of guiding and transport shared across a group.
Is a private Egypt tour worth it?
A private journey costs more than a place on a shared departure, because the guide, the vehicle and the driver serve one group. It is worth it when you value control of the day: when to start, how long to stay at each site and when to stop. If you prefer company and a fixed program, a small group gives you that.
On this site, every journey is a starting point: its length, hotels and pace can be adjusted before you confirm, subject to availability, and any Luxury journey can be quoted at the ultra-luxury level (see the difference between luxury and ultra-luxury). How a proposal is put together is explained in how a tailor-made Egypt trip is planned.
Two private journeys compared
Both run 8 days and 7 nights with private guided sightseeing on land and a five-star Nile cruise; they differ in the direction of the river and the time in Cairo.
| Journey | Nights | Nile cruise | Also on the program |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 Days | 2 in Cairo, 3 on the Nile, 2 in Cairo | Aswan to Luxor on The Oberoi Zahra (alternative Sonesta St. George I) | The Valley Temple at Giza, Edfu by carriage, a free day in Cairo |
| Private Egypt with a Nile Cruise, 8 Days | 2 in Cairo, 4 on the Nile, 1 in Cairo | Luxor to Aswan on The Oberoi Philae (alternatives The Oberoi Zahra, Sonesta St. George I) | A short camel ride at Giza, a carriage to Edfu, Philae by boat |
Domestic flights are not included in any journey; they are booked and paid separately. Both journeys sit in the Luxury collection, and either can be quoted at the ultra-luxury level. To begin, send a request with your dates.
Questions travelers ask
Are private Egypt tours worth it?
They are worth it if you want control of your day. Your own guide, vehicle and driver let you arrive at opening time, stay longer where you are interested and stop when you have seen enough. A private journey costs more than a place on a shared departure, so travelers who enjoy company and a fixed program may prefer a small group.
How many people are on a small-group tour of Egypt?
Small-group operators usually publish maximums of 12 to 16 travelers on their Egypt tours. One operator that caps a tour at 16 gives its average group as 12. Limits vary by program: one escorted journey of 13 days is limited to 34 guests. Check the published maximum for the departure you are considering.
Is the Nile cruise private on a private Egypt tour?
The ship is not. On a Nile cruise ship, the ship is shared with other guests, while the guided visits ashore are private where the journey lists private guided sightseeing. A dahabiya is also shared with its other guests unless your group charters the whole boat. On land, the guide, the vehicle and the driver are for your group alone.
Does this site offer small-group tours?
No. The site sells private luxury and ultra-luxury journeys through Egypt, planned with the traveler and confirmed in writing, with no group tours and no budget tours. Each journey is a starting point: its length, hotels and pace can be adjusted before you confirm, subject to availability, and any Luxury journey can be quoted at the ultra-luxury level.
Does a private tour avoid the crowds?
No tour can empty a famous site, but a private one lets you choose the hour. Karnak and the Valley of the Kings open at 6 a.m., and Philae at 7 a.m. One guide describes Abu Simbel as busiest from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., so a private visit can be timed around that window.
Are domestic flights included in a private Egypt journey?
No. Domestic flights, for example Cairo to Luxor or Aswan to Cairo, are not included in any journey on this site; they are booked and paid separately. Private Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, 8 Days, for example, lists both legs, Cairo to Aswan and Luxor to Cairo, under Not included.
