Egypt in 4 or 5 Days: A Short Luxury Itinerary
Five days in Egypt two ways: Cairo in depth, or the pyramids plus a fast day in Luxor and a visit to Philae. Day by day, with where you sleep and what you give up.

Yes, if you pick one focus. Egypt in 5 days covers Cairo and Giza in depth, with 4 nights in the city, or the pyramids plus Luxor's two banks in one day and Philae the next, using two domestic flights. A Nile cruise does not fit alongside Cairo: the shortest such journey here is 7 days. With 4 days, stay in Cairo.
Key takeaways
- Five Private Days in Cairo: 4 nights in one Cairo hotel, with Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian Museum, the NMEC, the Citadel, Old Cairo and Khan El Khalili.
- Five Days of Egypt's Highlights: 2 nights in Cairo, 1 in Luxor and 1 back in Cairo; both banks of Luxor in a single day, then a private drive to Aswan for Philae and a Nubian village.
- The highlights plan needs two domestic flights, Cairo to Luxor and Aswan to Cairo, which are not included; the Cairo plan needs none.
- Five days leaves out a Nile cruise with Cairo, Saqqara and Abu Simbel: the shortest Cairo and Nile journey on the site is 7 days.
- There is no 4-day journey: a 4-day trip is one of the 5-day plans shortened by a day, which any journey allows before you confirm.
Egypt in 5 days: two ways to spend them
The site has two 5-day journeys. One stays in Cairo; the other uses two domestic flights to add Luxor and Aswan. Both are private, with your own guide, vehicle and driver on land.

|---|---|---|
| Nights | 4 in Cairo | 2 in Cairo, 1 in Luxor, 1 in Cairo |

| Beyond the temples | The Citadel, Old Cairo and Khan El Khalili | By boat to a Nubian village near Aswan |

Five days in Cairo, day by day
Five Private Days in Cairo is for travelers who would rather know one city well than cross the country at speed, with time for its three great museums.
| Day | What you see | Where you sleep |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Landing in Cairo, met at passport control; private transfer to your hotel | Cairo |
| Day 2 | Giza, for the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx; then the Grand Egyptian Museum and Tutankhamun's treasures | Cairo |
| Day 3 | The Egyptian Museum, then the NMEC and its Royal Mummies Hall | Cairo |
| Day 4 | The Citadel and the Mohamed Ali Mosque; Old Cairo, with the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue; Khan El Khalili | Cairo |
| Day 5 | Private transfer to the airport for your flight home | Flight home |
Day 2 joins Giza, three pyramids built for kings of the 4th dynasty, with the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the Tutankhamun collection of more than 5,000 objects is shown complete. Day 3 sets two museums side by side: the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, inaugurated in 1902, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, whose Royal Mummies Gallery shows 17 kings and 3 queens. Day 4 is the medieval and Coptic city: the Mohamed Ali Mosque, built in 1848 and known as the Alabaster Mosque; the Ben Ezra Synagogue, the oldest in Egypt; and the lanes of the Khan El Khalili bazaar. What is worth buying there is covered in what to buy in Egypt.
Five days with Luxor and Aswan, day by day
Five Days of Egypt's Highlights trades depth for reach. It suits travelers who do not mind an early start and a packed day of temples, and who would rather sleep in a hotel than on a ship.
| Day | What you see | Where you sleep |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Landing in Cairo, met at passport control; private transfer to your hotel | Cairo |
| Day 2 | The Giza pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple; the Egyptian Museum | Cairo |
| Day 3 | Flight to Luxor; Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank, then the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the West Bank | Luxor |
| Day 4 | By private car to Aswan; Philae, the temple of Isis on Agilika Island; by boat to a Nubian village; flight back to Cairo | Cairo |
| Day 5 | Private transfer to the airport for your flight home | Flight home |
Day 3 is the long one: both banks of ancient Thebes in a single day, where one temples guide advises giving Karnak alone at least two hours. On day 4 the drive from Luxor to Aswan is included in the journey; the flights from Cairo to Luxor and from Aswan back to Cairo are not.
A third way: five days on the Nile alone
If the temples matter more to you than the pyramids, the site's two Nile cruises are themselves 5 days and 4 nights, from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor, with a private guide at every site ashore. They leave Cairo out entirely. They sit with the dahabiya programs in the luxury Nile cruises, and the choice of direction is explained in Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor.
What 5 days leaves out
- A Nile cruise with Cairo. The shortest journey on the site that combines the two is 7 days, with 3 nights on board; see the 7-day itinerary.
- Saqqara and Abu Simbel. Both are in the site's 10-day Nile journey. Abu Simbel alone is about 280 km (174 miles) from Aswan by road.
- Time in Luxor. On the highlights plan, Luxor has one day and one night, shared between the East Bank and the West Bank.
- Upper Egypt altogether, on the Cairo plan.
If you have only 4 days
There is no 4-day journey on the site; the shortest journeys run 5 days. A 4-day trip starts from one of them and drops a day, which any journey allows before you confirm, subject to availability. Once the arrival day and the departure day are counted, 4 days leave two full days for touring. In Cairo that still covers Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum on one day, and the Egyptian Museum or the old city on the other. Fitting Luxor and Aswan into the same two days would mean two domestic flights as well, so Cairo alone is the easier fit.
Flights, tips and what is included
Domestic flights are not included in any journey; they are booked and paid separately. The highlights plan needs two: Cairo to Luxor, about 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes on EgyptAir's schedule, and Aswan to Cairo. Tips are not included either; customary amounts are set out in tipping in Egypt.
Both plans include airport meet and assist with a name sign at passport control, a private guide who speaks English, Portuguese, German or Spanish, entrance fees at each site on the program, bottled water while touring and private air-conditioned transfers. Each is a starting point, quoted in a written proposal that names the route, the hotels and room types, what is included and what is not. Other trip lengths are compared in how many days you need in Egypt.
Questions travelers ask
Is 5 days enough for Egypt?
Enough for one part of it. Five days covers Cairo and Giza properly, or the pyramids plus a fast day in Luxor and a short visit to Aswan. On the site's journeys it does not cover a Nile cruise alongside Cairo, Saqqara or Abu Simbel; the shortest Cairo and Nile journey is 7 days.
Is 4 days in Egypt enough?
For Cairo, yes. After the arrival and departure days, 4 days leave two full days of touring: enough for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, plus the Egyptian Museum or the old city. The site has no 4-day journey, so one of the 5-day plans is shortened by a day in a written proposal.
Can you see the pyramids and Luxor in 5 days?
Yes. Five Days of Egypt's Highlights spends day 2 at Giza and the Egyptian Museum, flies to Luxor on day 3 for both banks of the river in one day, and adds Philae and a Nubian village near Aswan on day 4 before the flight back to Cairo. It is a full pace.
Can you do a Nile cruise in 5 days?
Yes, without Cairo. The site's two Nile cruises run 5 days and 4 nights, from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor, and both propose The Oberoi Philae, with a private guide at every site. Combined with Cairo, the shortest journey is 7 days, with 3 nights on board from Aswan to Luxor.
Where do you stay on a 5-day Egypt trip?
In Cairo the journeys propose The St. Regis Cairo, with the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza or the Marriott Mena House as alternatives. The highlights plan adds one night in Luxor at the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, or at Al Moudira Hotel or the Sonesta St. George Hotel Luxor.
Are flights included in a 5-day Egypt trip?
No. Domestic flights are not included in any of the site's journeys. Five Private Days in Cairo needs none. The highlights plan needs two, Cairo to Luxor and Aswan to Cairo, booked and paid separately; the drive from Luxor to Aswan between them is included. International flights and the visa are not included either.
